tuscany & umbria pictures

I know I'm so far behind on uploading. Here are my pictures from Tuscany & Umbria

Now, with titles!

This is a crazy altar in Arezzo. Could you imagine that as your altar at church??

More of the altar, with the stained glass in the background - isn't it beautiful?

I really liked this side altar in Arezzo, but couldn't get a good angle or picture of it. I think I still want you all to realize how colorful it is, so please take a look at it, even though its a bad picture.

This is a bad picture, and I know it. But it has an interesting story behind it. There was once a painting of the Virgin Mary in a bakery and the bakery caught fire. Everything in the bakery was destroyed, except, when they were going through the rubble, they found the painting and its colors had dramatically gotten brighter.

Here is a close up of the painting, you can see its good colors, my bad for the blurryness.

Typical medieval cross & depiction of Jesus.

Tuscan Hills

This is the view from the castle where we had our wine tasting.

A awfully blurry picture of the wine barrels...

These are the old terracotta olive oil holders - unfortunately, they're not allowed to use them anymore for cleanliness reasons, but they are still on display. Also, notice the rings above them? Those are left over from the original purpose of this space...the dungeon!

Red wine barrels! Notice how they're stained red...

Beautiful Assisi

More of Assisi

I really loved this stained glass picture of St. Francis

A close up of Francis

Liz running across the square in front of St. Francis' basilica - with the Umbrian hills in the background.

It was misty, but it was beautiful!

More of the Umbrian hills...

Katie & I walking up to see St. Francis.

Typical Tuscan/Umbrian landscape shot

I just realized how many pictures of this I took...on the front of St. Francis' basilica, beautiful.

More of his basilica

Our very excited class, attentively listening.

Facade of St. Francis' Basilica

Doors to St. Francis' Basilica

Assisi is on top of a hill so all the views were like this, unfortunately, it was a little misty out...

Doors in Assisi

Old houses in Assisi - actually, if you notice, the part that is sticking out is an old version of an addition. Kind of cool...

Assisi

What a beautiful fountain.

An old fresco (that you can't really see) above the door of a church in Assisi

What a beautiful arch, this is so typically Italian...

The old Roman forum in the Assisi city center

I love columns

Look how old it looks!

A frescoed arch

The bell tower in Assisi

Dr. Dawson doing his thing in front of a fountain in Assisi

I have an arch addiction

Also, I have an addiction to covered passageways

They're just so pretty...

Another shot of the bell tower

Walking the streets of Assisi

More of Assisi streets

This is a castle, but it was really built for defensive purposes. Isn't it beautiful? We tried to go up there, but we didn't have enough time.

Olive trees, which are easily identified with their silver leaves...
